Detroit Lions Had a Crazy Ask in Matthew Stafford Trade Deal
Here we are, years after the big Matthew Stafford trade deal between the Detroit Lions and L.A. Rams, and people are still talking about it. That makes sense, because it was a huge deal at the time, and it still play an important dynamic in the Detroit team.
If you recall, The Detroit Lions traded quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and three draft picks in 2021. The Lions also gave Stafford the power to pick where he wanted to go, and he even reportedly stopped a deal that would have sent him to the Carolina Panthers. Of course he would want to go to the L.A. Rams, because that team was stacked. I personally think a lot of quarterbacks would consider that roster their “dream team.”
But, when the Lions made that deal, they reportedly asked for a different player than Goff- one that they weren’t going to get. Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports broke the news during an interview on the “You Pod To Win The Game” podcast. During the chat (via Heavy.com), he said, “The Lions and Rams had already had talks about Stafford. They were a little crazy because initially Detroit was like ‘well, can we get Aaron Donald in this deal?’ and the Rams were like ‘yeah no. That’s definitely not going to happen.'” That seems like a pretty ridiculous and unreasonable ask, so I’m surprised to hear this news. But, maybe the Lions figured, hey, it wouldn’t hurt to ask, so they might as well go all out. Either way, it didn’t go down, but we did get Goff, and Stafford obviously got L.A. and a Super Bowl victory.
