NBA Rebrands MVP Trophy As ‘Michael Jordan Trophy’
“You are simply the standard by which basketball excellence is measured.”
Those were the words spoken by the late NBA Commissioner David Stern when presenting Michael Jordan with his third NBA MVP award in 1992.
Many would agree truer words have never been spoken in basketball.
As of Tuesday morning, the National Basketball Association has rebranded their MVP Trophy as the Michael Jordan Trophy.
Jordan approved the design of the trophy, but the statue doesn’t bear his likeness, although it does stand at 23.6 tall and weighs 23.6 pounds – nods to his jersey number and championships won.
Also worth noting, the Defensive Player of the Year will now receive The Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy; the Rookie of the Year will receive The Wilt Chamberlain Trophy; the Sixth Man of the Year will now receive The John Havlicek Trophy; and the NBA’s Most Improved Player will receive The George Mikan Trophy.
