Recently, Clever Move looked at traffic fatalities, alcohol-related crashes, insurance premiums, uninsured drivers, weather, and the number of repair auto shops per capita to compile a list of the cities with the worst drivers.
They ranked 50 cities in the United States with the best and worst drivers. The city named with the worst drivers was Jacksonville, Florida. Louisville, Kentucky came in second, followed by Orlando, Tampa, Nashville, Memphis, Tennessee, Riverside, California, New Orleans, Birmingham, Alabama, and Sacramento.
Where did Detroit fall on the worst drivers list?
The city of Detroit ranked number 17 on the list. The analysis said Detroit pays the highest insurance premiums, which cost around $4,726 per year. Not only does Detroit have high insurance premiums, one in 4 Motor City drivers is uninsured. Apparently, the highest rate among all 50 cities Clever Move studied.
In the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts official crash data report, Wayne County ranked the highest for persons killed or suspected serious injuries that were involved in speed-related crashes.
The cities with the best drivers are Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Boston, San Francisco, and New York. “New York City has the fewest drunk driving deaths (0.6 per 100,000 residents) and the second-fewest driving fatalities per year (3.3 per 100,000 residents),” said Clever Move’s report.
According to Nationwide Insurance, 86% of drivers rate their own driving as very good or excellent. However, a lot of people admit to distractions like eating while driving and using their phones. On the other hand, 38% admit to feeling more "impatient" behind the wheel.
More than 90% of people say other drivers on the road are more aggressive, reckless, and drive faster than they did a year ago. While only 23% would rate other Americans' driving as very good or excellent.
