From crop tops to corsets, many clothing styles have parents questioning the appropriateness of children's outfits. Meghan Mayer of Michigan was recently shopping at Target when she saw an outfit in the girls' clothing section that made her think twice. In a TikTok video, she shared a dress that seems "modest" at first glance but has a bit more to it. Mayer took a closer look and realized that there were side cutouts on the waist of the dress. But she couldn't figure out if she was overacting or if the dress was actually inappropriate.

Mayer told TODAY.com, "I’m like, 'Wait a minute, what in the world is going on here?'" She continued to tell the outlet, "I don't like filming myself in public, but I was curious to see if other people thought the slits were weird."

She noted in the video that her daughters are ages 10 and 7 and are not allowed to wear bikinis. "I am a little bit more conservative when it comes to my kids' clothing, so maybe I’m overreacting, but let me know what you think of these dresses," Mayer, said in the video.

Reactions

Many people in the comments seemed to agree with the TikTokker. "I completely agree. My daughter is 4 and is in a 6/7. Absolutely inappropriate," someone wrote. Another person said "I think retailers are trying to mature our kids too fast. I agree with mom!"

Some people just wanted Mayer to let it go. "Fun fact… you don’t have to buy it," one person said. Another person reminisced about their one childhood saying. "When I was a kid in the 70' s I wore halter tops and tube tops they were not seen as big deals. I don’t think this is scandalous."

Someone said it just depends. "Overreaction for sure. It’s super cute! Now if it was super short or low cut I would 100% get where you’re coming from," they said. A person shared that they bought the dress for their 6-year-old, saying "I think it’s super cute."

At the end of the day, most parents want the same thing. They want their kids to grow up to be self-assured and body-confident but also safe. It's important to know that there is more than one way to parent. If you feel you know what's best for your child, then roll with it.
