McLellan Takes Red Wings to the Ice for Old-School Mini Training Camp
Following Todd McLellan’s appointment as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings in late December 2024, the team is going old school with technique fundamentals through a mini-training camp.
When McLellan replaced Derek Lalonde as head coach in late December 2024, he commented on the team’s lack of a training camp to “implement his systems into the team’s way of doing things,” reported DetHockeyNews. With the NHL taking a two-week break to host the 4 Nations Face-Off, McLellan will use the four days of practice he now has to host his camp.
“We spent time showing them video of our team here instead of showing them maybe L.A. Kings clips to explain our points. We can now show Detroit Red Wings clips, which is a real positive. And then we took it onto the ice,” McLellan explained.
During the camp, McLellan has devoted time to working with the team on conditioning, offensive concepts such as forechecking and entries, and the team’s end. Special teams and faceoff scenarios could also be involved, but due to time constraints, not everything will be implemented.
McLellan’s goal, however, is to help his players understand how he wants them to play the game in the future.
