The Detroit Lions' free agency signing of quarterback Kyle Allen has left the team's supporters and foes wondering what will happen with backup quarterback Hendon Hooker.

Allen's signing with the team has given the impression that the Lions don't trust Hooker to do the job.

Writing for ESPN, Ben Solak offered his analysis of the Allen-Hooker situation with the Lions.

"There's nothing wrong with the signing — everyone loves a veteran quarterback at QB2. But the Lions are making it clear they do not trust Hendon Hooker," Solak said. "They replaced him at QB2 with Teddy Bridgewater last season once Bridgewater was done coaching his way to a high school championship, and Hooker will now battle with Allen for the same job. At this point, I'd be surprised if the 2023 third-round pick becomes a reliable backup anywhere. The Lions probably need a new developmental QB of the future."

An SI.com report observed that Hooker doesn't appear to be on the trading block at this point, but his future as a backup quarterback may be more uncertain than ever since he arrived in the Motor City in 2023.

Solak explained that Detroit has done a good job targeting appropriate fits for the team in the draft and keeping players who have demonstrated success on the field and aligned with the Lions' team culture and identity. He noted how the Lions made strategic decisions to retain linebacker Derrick Barnes, defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike, and defensive end Marcus Davenport.

Detroit also kept offensive lineman Dan Skipper and wideout Tim Patrick on short-term deals that proved affordable for the team.
