Former Mets GM Predicts Promising Future for Detroit Tigers’ Riley Greene
MLB insider and former New York Mets general manager Steve Phillips discussed outfielder Riley Greene's 2024 season and how he could become one of the Detroit Tigers' most valuable players. "You talk about Riley Greene playing a solid left field for the Detroit Tigers last year. He's a leader on the team. He's just 23 years old. Entering his age 24 season, a 5.4 WAR [wins above replacement], the fourth highest for an outfielder in the major leagues. [Juan] Soto, [Aaron] Judge, and Jarren Duran were the three guys in front of him," Phillips told Sportskeeda.com. "I think this guy's ceiling is phenomenal. Over a 130 OPS+ last year, he can hit for power. He can hit for average. I think we've not even come close to the level [he can get to]." Greene was a significant part of the Tigers' impressive performance in the 2024 postseason. He finished the Tigers' regular season with a .262 batting average, 24 home runs, and 74 RBIs. His consistency with his performance earned the 24-year-old his first-ever All-Star selection in July 2024 while qualifying him as a finalist for a Silver Slugger award. Greene ended his 2024 hitting season with the Detroit Tigers on a high note. He is expected to only continue to improve as he grows in his elite baseball performance. Playing for the Tigers in the AL Central, Greene will have to elevate his game further and compete against notable players like Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt Jr. for the MVP award.
