The free agency period is always a fun one. For Detroit Lions fans, it's already been an exciting time, with some surprises such as the Lions signing running back David Montgomery and Jamaal Williams signing with New Orleans.
Now, the Lions have sealed a multi-million dollar deal to snag one of the best safties in the NFL. Read on for the story behind the signing and what it could mean for the Detroit Lions.
Adding to the Lions' Defense
The Detroit Lions need to improve their defense in 2023. Now, the team has signed former Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a one-year, $8 million deal, per NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. That deal also reportedly includes $6.5 million fully guaranteed at signing.

What can he bring to the Lions?
C.J. Gardner-Johnson had an impressive first year with the Eagles, clocking six interceptions. He was also a big help on defense to help take the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Hence, it appears the Lions have snagged a key part of their defense going forward. Before Philly, he was with the Saints.

Injuries
C.J. Gardner-Johnson's season wasn't without injuries. In week 12, he experienced a lacerated kidney, so he was out for five straight games. But, he was back in week 18 and help the Eagles go to the Super Bowl.
