‘I Am Because We Are’: New Photographic Mural Honors Three Detroit Neighborhoods
A massive photo mural created by Detroit artists Jessica Trevino and Roman Blanquart to honor Detroit’s Corktown, North Corktown, and Hubbard Richard neighborhoods was unveiled on Saturday, Dec. 14.
The artwork titled “I Am Because We Are,” covers two sides of the former APAC building at 1800 Eighteenth St. in Detroit. It features 10-by-23-foot banners containing the portraits of 104 residents who embody their communities’ spirit, diversity, and connectedness while reflecting the African philosophy of Ubuntu.
Saturday’s event featured the mural artists, former Detroit Free Press photographers, and many individuals profiled in the portraits. Holiday music and refreshments provided by the Hubbard Richard Residents Association rounded out the celebration.
“This mural is a celebration of the people who make these neighborhoods so vibrant and unique,” said Blanquart in an interview with the Detroit Free Press. “It would not have been possible without the incredible support of our community members, partners, and funders. Their generosity, collaboration, and shared commitment to preserving the spirit of these neighborhoods have been inspiring.”
The art installation is one of several developments in this area of Detroit, including the reopening of Michigan Central Station. The mural will be on display throughout the next several months.
