Remember That Time Dan Campbell Wanted a Pet Lion?
Ah, memories. I recently wrote this article about some of Dan Campbell’s most hilarious quotes, and it reminded me of the time that he wanted a pet lion. Yes, an actually pet lion for the Lions’ practice! Dan Campbell pet lion talk is real.
“Pet lion” is not really a phrase that works. I mean, you can have a lion, but you can’t really call it a pet. Pets are cats or dogs, not friggin’ lions.

The quote came back in 2021. “I don’t think we’re going to be able to do it, but I would love to literally just have a pet lion,” Campbell said on Pardon My Take. “Just a legit pet lion on a chain, a big ass chain, and he really is my pet. We just walk around the building, we go out to practice, we’re at 7-on-7, we’re behind the kicker when he’s kicking.” That is one crazy idea. I’m not sure how much motivation it would have brought to the team, but hey, I give Dan points for creativity.
So, did he ever get his lions for the Detroit Lions practices? I don’t think so. How would that even work? I can’t imagine. But, he can take the team to the Detroit Zoo to check out some real pet lions.

Appearing on the “Pardon My Take” Podcast, Campbell said he asked for a pet lion at practice.
“I’ll tell you what I would really love to do, just in general,” he said. “I’ve talked to (Lions owner) Sheila (Ford Hamp) about this. I don’t think we’re going to be able to do it, but I would love to literally just have a pet lion. Just a legit pet lion on a chain — a big-a** chain. And he just, he really is my pet. I’m all for a good analogy. But this one is a bit much for me. But, hey, I’m not a football player. Talk the talk, and walk the walk, right? Here’s Dan Campbell’s toilet paper pep talk. The quote is from July 2, 2021, talking about practice in a press conference via Michael Silver.
