Jared Goff seems at home with the Detroit Lions. Really, he does. After a rocky first season, the quarterback settled into the Lions during his second season with the team and helped turn the season around. Towards the end of 2022, he was clocking some of the best stats for NFL quarterbacks in the season.

So, it’s obvious that Goff will get an extension at some point. I think he deserves it. The question is, how much money will he get, and how long will that extension go?

Read on for some experts’ opinions. Also, listen to “The Squad with Anne Erickson” below for commentary on the Lions’ draft picks!

  • Why is Jared Goff's contract extension such a topic?

I personally think there should be more of a sense of urgency to come up with a contract extension for Jared Goff. He just had a stellar season, and it’s been a long time since the Detroit Lions have had a team that really gelled. He’s the heart of that team right now. Considering how difficult it is to find a good, experienced quarterback, we need to lock him in.

  • How much are quarterbacks making today?

NFL quarterbacks are making record amounts of cash in 2023. Most recently, Lamar Jackson signed a deal with the Ravens and will be making $52 million in 2023. He’s the highest-paid NFL player ever. Jalen Hurts of the Eagles is No. 2 at $51 million, and Aaron Rodgers is No. 2 at $50.3 million.

  • A possible deal for Jared Goff

Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network recently discussed the contract extension possibilities for the Lions and Goff. He makes the argument for a short but pricy contract.

“A short-term extension could work out for both sides,” he says. “A two-year, $82 million pact would place Goff just above Daniel Jones, Dak Prescott, and Stafford in average annual value and put him on schedule to reach free agency in advance of his age-33 season.”

  • Will that happen?

That actually sounds like a good idea, in my opinion. Jared Goff should be happy to be one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL, and it also frees up the Lions to look around when Goff starts to get up there in age. I mean, he won’t be old, but he’ll be older than many quarterbacks. I think he has a good 10 years left in him, but maybe he will want an early out, anyway, to stay healthy.
