Red Wings’ Talent Pipeline for Goalie Looks Promising
The Detroit Red Wings’ goalie talent pipeline is showing promise. Ville Husso has been the team’s No. 1 selection. Since then, the Wings have gone back and forth between Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon for much of the season and lately have relied on Petr Mrazek.
Some promising talent exists for the Red Wings, with AHL All-Star in the Grand Rapids Griffins’ Sebastian Coss. The team also has a two-time Big Ten goalie of the year in Michigan State’s Trey Augustine and a standout major junior in Moncton’s Rudy Guimond.
According to an MLive report, Augustine, 20, has followed his strong freshman season with a more robust sophomore one. He improved his goals-against average from 2.96 to 2.02 and his save percentage from .915 to .927. The Spartans host Ohio State on Saturday in the Big Ten championship game.
Cossa is anticipated to remain with Grand Rapids for another season since the Red Wings have Mrazek and Talbot under contract for 2025-2026.
Guimond might be the Red Wings’ most diamond-in-the-rough prospect. The team secured him in the 2023 draft, 148 picks after Augustine, who was 169th overall in the sixth round.
“All he’s done is go 15-0-0, the best start ever for a CHL goalie,” said MLive’s Ansar Khan. “He has a 1.52 GAA and .948 save percentage but hasn’t appeared in enough games to qualify for the league lead.”
Guimond started the season with Cedar Rapids of the USHL before a November ruling change made CHL players eligible to play in the NCAA. That decision prompted Guimond to join Moncton. He is committed to playing for Yale next season.
